Newport Medieval Ship was discovered in the mud of the River Usk in Wales in June 2002, much to the amazement of the team building the City’s new Riverside Theatre. Buried for more than 500 years, 2000 pieces of the best-preserved 15th Century vessel in the world were discovered.
It has taken a dedicated team of archaeologists 20 years to remove and painstakingly stabilise and preserve its timbers while also retrieving some 1000 medieval artifacts. In the process they have put together the world’s largest 3D jigsaw puzzle with CGI recreations of the ship and its build.
The international significance of this medieval vessel is monumental. Almost an entire century older than the Mary Rose, this unique time capsule will give viewers a fascinating glimpse of life onboard a cargo ship, bearing witness to the habits and behaviours of its crew as well as Medieval European society.
