Air shows and aviation are nearly as old as film itself. From the very first air show held at Rheims, France in 1909, air shows have been the subject of countless number of films. Many of the films have long since disappeared or survive as tantalising fragments but, many more have survived including film from that very first air show at Rheims.
There is the speed and noise of the military jet demonstration teams, the precision of national display teams like the RAF Red Arrows or USAF Thunderbirds. There are the incredible solo aerobatics as well as the glorious site and sound of restored historic warbirds. As aircraft technology has developed, so has filming equipment become small enough to take the viewer right inside the cockpit during a display.
