Kids Raising Kids takes audiences inside CC Cares at Canberra College - a unique school for teen parents but our characters’ lessons are not confined to the classroom. Many of the students are single parents, some are overcoming family trauma and drug dependency and all are navigating a complex system. What unites them is a will to transform their lives - to get an education, stay on the right side of the law, and be the best parents they can be.
In this incredible one-hour documentary, widely-held stereotypes of teenage parents are challenged in the most revealing, heart-warming and compelling ways. Audiences walk alongside these young people as they manage their relationships, home lives and strive toward graduation - all while navigating the demands of new parenthood.
In 2021, there are 13 staff members to meet the needs of 130 students enrolled and their 165 children. There have been parents at CC as young as 13. Five support staff members, trained in Children’s Services, manage the children throughout the school day.
The stereotype that only teens from low-socio economic, or specific cultural backgrounds fall pregnant is challenged by the diversity of CC’s student body. The policy at CC is “If they’re willing to come, we’re willing to take them” and there are new enrollments all year round. All students at CC have something to prove, something to learn, and a child they hope will have a better life than them.
