QUEENS OF COMBAT: ROME'S FEMALE GLADIATORS

The traditional story of the gladiator is dominated by male fighters, drenched in blood and glory. But history has forgotten and, in some cases, deliberately hidden the female gladiators. Called Gladiatrix, they were as much a part of the violent Roman blood sport as the men.

With the help of a top team of international experts we unearth the evidence to show how women were integral to these infamous combats.

Piecing together the evidence hiding in plain sight across Europe as diverse as a statue in a Hamburg museum, a stone frieze in London and the writings of Roman scholars, Queens of Combat aims to restore the Gladiatrices to their rightful place in history.
