As unheard first-person testimony is brought to life by actors, they're observed by historians on their own quest to get to the truth of this controversial period of British history.
In June 1940 the Nazis were sweeping through Europe, with France fallen and Britain on high alert and the Channel Islands in danger. The British government takes the strategic decision to withdraw troops, leaving the islands and its remaining 66,000 residents open to German invasion - a propaganda victory for Hitler and possible first step to invading the mainland. At first the islanders are treated with courtesy , but as the war progresses, they witness a nightmare roll out of Nazism - with persecutions, a cult of informing, mass deportations, starvation, slave labour camps, and the horror of the Holocaust on British soil.
Every islander faced an inescapable dilemma: how to live with the enemy? Some chose the dangerous path of resistance, others collaborated but many walked the difficult line in between, just trying to survive. Their choices shaped history and some feel left a skewed view of the islanders and their behaviour - this series aims to present a full picture of this still divisive subject.
